Thought for the day: The best Christmas present

As you all know I had to stop blogging.

Although it was a real excuse that I would be busy traveling, it was also due to the GIANT surprise my family was in for on Monday.

On Monday I took three tube lines, a 30 minute train ride, hopped on British Airways and flew 9.5 hours to fly home for Christmas.

My family had no idea!

Thanks to my best friend Katie, Richard, my other bestie Alissa, and Albert I managed to not only surprise my family, but also to surprise my friends at work and diving as well!

All the surprises were filmed, so do not fear, I will post the video once it is completely edited and looking FABULOUS! 🙂

There are two stories posted: My family’s surprise and my friends’ surprise.

So click either of the two links to check out the surprises! 🙂

Thought for the day: I made it through my first semester of grad school!

WOW. I can’t believe it. As of right now… I AM DONE WITH MY FIRST SEMESTER OF GRADUATE SCHOOL!

This is insane.

What a weird feeling. I feel like just yesterday I was applying for graduate schools, just freshly graduated from USF with my bachelors…and now… I am half way through grad school.

After all the stress in Radio. The laughs on Thursdays. Complaining and meltdowns on Mondays class. Jokes we have among our course. Through everything we went through we came out on top.

We made it guys! We finished our first semester without killing ourselves or killing eachother… even though at some times we worried about a few of you 😉

Now we have a month off…away from eachother. I can’t believe the people who have been there through everything with me will be away from me for a month!

Then we will be back together for the second semester.

Then we will start over again with the stress.

Until then! Cheers! To the fact we lived through our first semester!

Drink! Be merry! Enjoy the break! 🙂

Thought for the day: Traveling the world > sleep

This post may come off a bit loopy…since I am running on not even 12 hours of sleep within the past 3 days.

The excitement of traveling to a different country has managed to out weigh the fact that a human being needs something like 6 to 8 hours of sleep a night. For me this weekend…try 2 to 4 hours per night.

Thank goodness for adrenaline.

The first night, Sarah and I had a sleepover since the cab was coming to take us to the airport at like 3:30 a.m. Night after that…well…we were in Dublin. Come on.

You can sleep when you’re dead! At least that is how we lived this weekend.

Traveling takes a lot out of a person though. Not like you’re doing anything besides sitting down in the same chair for hours, but for some reason it takes so much energy to travel.

The flights weren’t to long, hardest part was how early in the morning they are. That is what you get when you book with a super cheap company. Beggars can’t be choosers when it comes to dirt poor graduate students.

The worst part of this weekend (travel wise) was the trip from the Stansted Airport in London back to campus.

We took the Stansted Express from the airport to Liverpool Street Station. Easy right? NOT!

We then tried to take the tube…however, with all the tube closures over the weekend, it took us longer to get from the airport to home than it did to fly to Ireland.

A bit ridiculous right? That would explain my exhaustion right now.

In the end, I will gladly say that when it comes to sleep…you really don’t need much of it when it comes to traveling.

Live in the moment. You can sleep when you’re dead…or on holiday.

Travel. Enjoy life. Don’t sleep. 😉

Thought for the day: Hostles are not a 5 star joint

Staying in a hostel for he first time has defidintly been an experience.

Since there were three of us (two female and one male) we got a mixed sex bedroom room. Meaning we were in a mixed gender room…and we had three randoms living with us for the two days we were there.

Love our luck. We ended up with three French guys who didn’t speak interest. They apparently were surprised to see two females in their room. Initially they looked a little shocked.

We woke the poor guys up on Saturday morning. Leave it to the girls to need to shower and get pretty before a bus tour (never know when a cute Irish guy will be around).

First issue with that morning. It was barely 6 a.m. The French guys came in about 3 a.m. and we could not get the shower to turn on.

We had to get the reception guy to fix it…and he nearly broke it. He made so much noise, there is no way that the poor roommates did not wake up.

The reception people were super nice though. They were very helpful, called the tour service and airport drop off bus for us.

Anything we needed…they helped out with. Super nice guys.

If you are a female, here is something to know: We had to put our makeup on in the men’s bathroom as well as straighten our hair in the dinning area.

Although there were some pros and cons to the hostel situation. I think all together I did not mind.

Next time, I would rather have a private room with just the people I am traveling with…or have a public room, but maybe end up with people more like us..that way when we get up to shower, we don’t ruin the beauty sleep of the men in our room.

Also, if you sleep talk or sleep walk…beware. I had a conversation in my sleep with the French guys when they came back at 5 a.m. and I swore I could understand them (might I add I don’t know French).

You get what you pay for with a hostel…however, this one did have free breakfast. Yumm! BONUS POINTS!

Thought for the day: The travel destinations are endless

One thing I have found out since I have lived in the UK is that the places to which you can travel are endless.

You can take the train to Paris for the weekend, or Dublin, or Scotland. You can go where ever your heart desires quite easily when it comes to places in Europe.

I mean, my friends and I got a round trip ticket to Dublin for the weekend for £40. Can you say amazing?

It is so easy to just hop on the train…or catch a cheap flight to take a weekend to go to a different destination. A weekend to see something new.

When I am in America, people go to a different state for the weekend. Not a different country. It is normal for my, as a Floridian to say I am going to a different city in Florida for the weekend… not even a different state.

However, here in London, I can say “oh yes, for a weekend get-a-way I am going to Ireland.” Come on! How great is that?

It is so easy to travel when you are in Europe. Everything is so close.

How can I NOT take advantage of this opportunity? I will gladly go broke to experience as many different places in Europe as possible.

Which at this moment in time… I am doing just that (sorry mom for making you give your broke daughter money).

It is worth it though. I rather travel than eat. Or shop….maybe.

I do love shopping.

Nope, I would pay for traveling rather than shopping, if need be.

Traveling is something not alot of people get to do. So, I might as well do it while I am young and unattached.

Live life to the fullest right?

So bring it on Europe! Let’s travel! 🙂

Thought for the day: Where has the time gone?

Can you believe today is the first day of December? I can’t.

I feel like just yesterday I was just some little girl from St. Pete with two suitcases moving to London.

Now, I have almost completed my first semester of grad school!

How insane is that?

I feel like we just passed Halloween…then Thanksgiving…and now, Christmas is in just a few weeks.

It is amazing how fast time really flies by.

Which makes me think of how much we take this thing called “time” for granted.

We sit by, going through the motions of life, then complain that time is going by to fast for us to keep up.

So why not live in the moment? Instead of looking so far into the future.

I feel like if we all took our days one step at a time, we would see and accomplish so much more that the world has to offer us.

Life is crazy, and totally unpredictable…Things are going to change you,

But you get to choose which ones you let change you.

Listen to your heart, follow your dreams and let no one tell you what you’re capable of.

Push the limits. Bend the rules. Enjoy every minute of it.

Laugh at everything. Believe in yourself. Never lose faith in others.

Settle for nothing but only the best and give 110% in everything you do.

Take risks. Live on the edge. Cherish every moment of it.

Remember, life is a gift.

Jump on every opportunity. Fight for what you believe.

Learn something new and appreciate criticism. Hate nothing,

Never forget where you came from and always remember where you are going.

Live Life to its fullest and have a reason for everything, Even if it’s totally insane.

Find Your purpose in life, and Live it!

Thought for the day: Do strikes make a difference?

Today is national strike day for many teachers in England.

Teachers all over London canceled school to march to save their pensions.

As if teachers don’t get paid enough to teach our upcoming youth, they want to make cuts in the education system to “save money”.

Why cut something as important as teachers? Do the people wanting to make these cuts not have kids? Better yet…do they not remember the teachers they had growing up?

Either way, my thought is do strikes really make a difference? Or is it just a waste of time an energy?

In some nations like Korea, South Africa, France and Spain general strikes are still being used for mass mobilization and political protest.

In the past decade, millions of Europeans have participated in nationwide work stoppages over public sector budget cuts, labor law revisions, or pension plan changes sought by conservative governments.

In Brazil, voters have even chosen a one-time strike leader, Luis Inacio (“Lula”) da Silva, to serve as president of their country.

In America, although the massive turnout of immigrant workers at escalating weekday marches and rallies in March, April and May of 2006 constituted political strikes on a scale usually witnessed only abroad.

Every year, more than 20,000 union contracts are negotiated.

Yet since 1992, walkouts by 1,000 workers or more have averaged less than 40 annually.

In 2004, there were just 17, with only 316,000 union members participating. 100,000 of them in a single four-day telephone strike.

In contrast, at the peak of labor’s post-World War II strike wave in 1952, there were 470 major strikes, affecting nearly three million workers nationwide

So I suppose, even if there is not a change, at least the voice of the people can no be ignored during a strike.

Your voice is heard. No matter what.

Mainly due to the fact there are a group of people rallying for what they believe is right…or wrong.

Striking gives us, normally working class people the chance to speak out and let our voice be heard to those in a higher power.

The authorities can ignore people individually, but as a whole, we get our voices heard.

Thought for the day: The one that got away

Everyone has that one person who you will always think of as “the one that got away”.

If you are saying to yourself..thats not me…you are a liar. Let’s be real for a second.

I am sure off the top of your head you can think of one guy/gal who you never took the risk with. Whether it is your best friend, high school crush, college roommate, or anything. You never took the leap to try.

Meaning, they were the one that got away. You never found out the “what if” that still, on occasion, lingers through your mind.

I have someone like that.

We have recently gotten back in touch after many years, but I will never forget him.

In my book, this crush was the one that got away. We stayed on the friends level, never more. Which I have always been okay with.

Although the thought still sits in my mind…”what if?”

My “what if” may never be answered…and that is one thing I will always wish I knew the answer to.

I have been in a poetry mood lately, so enjoy this poem below to go along with my post.

And remember. If you believe someone might be worth it…don’t miss the opportunity. Go for it.

Don’t let that special person forever (in your book) be labeled as “the one that got away”.

You know how you always have that one regret
Or that hope for something that didn’t happen yet
Or that one girl (or boy)
That you made your world
Or maybe you didn’t
And you made pushing her (him) away
Apart of your mission
And every day you had her (him) wishing
That she (he) was the one you were missing
While all along she (he) knew the truth
Knowing she (he) was never the first you’d choose
And all you ever did was bring tears to her (his) eyes
And pain to her (his) heart
When all she (he) ever did was care
And stay by you from the start
Then you suddenly realize how much they are worth
And that finding anyone like them
Is rarely if even possible to occur
And then you realize how special they truly were
But now it’s too late
Because now their marked as
The one that got away

Thought for the day: What am I thankful for?

Today (in America) is a very special holiday… it is the holiday where you make a big turkey, eat way to much mashed potatoes and gravy, and stuff yourself till you are in a food coma.

However, this holiday may be great because you get off school and eat delicious food, but it is also the holiday where you sit around and really think of things you are thankful for.

Today is Thanksgiving.

So naturally, since I can’t cook and it is extremely hard to find a turkey here in London, I figure I could name all the things I am thankful for.

I am thankful for having such an amazing supportive family. Without them I would be lost, unmotivated, and probably never have moved to London for graduate school.

I am thankful for my mommy. She is who I want to be like when I am one day a mother. She has always been there to support me, whether she thinks I am wrong or right. I love her so much. I don’t know what I would do without her.

I am thankful for my London family. They have kept me sane while stressing out over classes. They are there whenever I need them. They make London feel like home.

I am thankful for having the opportunity to study overseas. This experience will be one I will never forget.

I am thankful for all my amazing friends. Especially the ones who still keep in touch even though I am far away. You guys mean the world to me. I love you all!

I am thankful for my course mates (which also count in the family/friend category). They make class exciting and fun…even when it is anything except that. They help me not stress out and if I am stuck, they help me out.

I am thankful for anyone who reads my blog. You are helping me become a better blogger…which I need to not fail.

I am thankful for the roof over my head and the funds I have to live securely. I could live without these things, however they make life a little easier.

I am thankful for all the teachers and coaches that have been a part of my life. Without you and your guidance, I would not be where I am today.

I am thankful for being alive. I try to live my life to the fullest, since you only live once.

I am thankful for the beauty of life.

I am thankful for being thankful.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE! 🙂

Thought for the day: What does not kill you makes you stronger

Sometimes you need those friends who will listen, not judging, to your current life drama and actually care about what you’re saying and give real advice. Luckily, I had one do that for me tonight and it is exactly what I needed.

When we go through something bad in our lives and we make it through, we always come out learning more and finding out more about ourselves. Making us, in the long term, stronger than we were before.

I’m not saying I have had the worst childhood imaginable, but if there were things I wish I could have made better. Made happier. Made more positive.

Even now, at 22, I could name things I wish would have been different. However, if they were different, I don’t think I would be where I am today.

If things would have been different, I would not be the strong, independent woman I am now. I would not be so optimistic. I would not be driven. I would not be in London chasing my goals.

Although some things I have gone through still hurt and on a daily basis try to creep into my mind and break me down, I know I have only grown as a person because of them.

The decisions I have made have been made due to those life experiences, good and bad.

I have been shaped into the woman I am because of every single experience I have come across. Every single one I have learned from. And the knowledge is priceless.

Just think, of all the bad experiences you have had and you have come out on top, you can use your knowledge to help someone else get through their tough time.

You can inspire others with your story.

Even if it is in the slightest manner, you can be the light in someone’s life than they need during a time when they feel like nothing will turn around. You can help someone see the positive of a bad situation.

So, if you are going through something tough and you feel stuck, remember… keep your chin up and don’t give up. One day you will come out of it all with tons more knowledge.

Then you can inspire others with your story. Be a light for those in need of a friend, a shoulder to lean on. Never give up. Smile. 🙂
