Girls equal in British throne succession

They have finally gotten the rule changed. Now, if a baby girl is the first born in the royal family, it means she will be first in line to the throne, rather than being passed up by her younger brothers. The leaders of the 16 Commonwealth countries where the Queen is head of state unanimously approved the changes at a summit in Perth, Australia. The ban on the monarch being married to a Roman Catholic was also lifted.

The laws are not a matter for the 54-nation Commonwealth as a whole, only for the 16 countries which have the Queen as their head of state, known as realms. These countries are Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Jamaica, Antigua and Barbuda, Belize, Papua New Guinea, St Christopher and Nevis, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Tuvalu, Barbados, Grenada, Solomon Islands, St Lucia and the Bahamas.

Under the old succession laws (from more than 300 years) the heir to the throne is the first-born SON of the monarch. Only when there are no sons would the crown pass to the first born daughter. The succession changes will require a raft of historic legislation to be amended, including Britain’s 1701 Act of Settlement, the 1689 Bill of Rights and the Royal Marriages Act 1772. The change to the Royal Marriages Act will end a position where every descendant of George II is legally required to seek the consent of the monarch before marrying.

Needless to say, the UK’s royalty is coming around to how the rest of society works. Glad to see that they are finally putting women and men of an equal value…which they are. So now, if Prince William and Princess Kate have a baby girl first, she will be first in line to the thrown, which is awesome! Rumor has it that the Queen herself even backed the change to the succession laws…since she has been ruling for a while now (celebrating her Diamond Jubilee next year…kind of a big deal). All I can say is…GIRL POWER! OH YEA!

Next step… someone in the royal family (Prince Harry hint hint) will marry an American…aka me 😉 In my dreams I know. Maybe I can at least meet him…and we can fall in love…and I shall be a princess. I like that plan. its GO TIME!
