“Baby you’re a firework, come on show them what you’re worth”, thank you Katy Perry for that song. Because now every time I see fireworks I think of that song and last night…I was singing it along with my friends as we watched the Guy Fawkes fireworks display at Southwark Park.
Let me discuss who this Guy Fawkes character is a little bit for those of you who have no idea what I am talking about (aka the American’s who read my blog). On 5 November 1605, Guy Fawkes tried to blow up Parliament with gun powder. Whilst guarding explosives the plotters had placed beneath the House of Lords he was found and arrested. Celebrating that King James I survived the attempt on his life, people lit bonfires around London, and months later the introduction of the Observance of November 5th Act enforced an annual public day of thanksgiving for the plot’s failure.
This celebration is known as Guy Fawkes Night, Guy Fawkes Day, Bonfire Night, and Firework Night. A lot of names to celebrate someone trying to blow up a vital part of the English political system…right? No big deal apparently. Just kidding. They don’t really celebrate his failure…it more like the celebrate the King’s survival of the attempt to kill him, but really, they celebrate his failure. Go Britain for giving people an “A for effort”.
It was gorgeous! I love fireworks. They are beautiful. Enough said. Fireworks are so pretty. Who ever created them is a genius, for real. All the adorable children running around with sparklers, people sitting in the grass on blankets. The weather truly feels like Fall, it gives you a sense of comfort all bundled up in a coat and scarf. As I watched the fireworks, I could not help but think to myself “I am actually in London, watching fireworks, celebrating with the Brits and my best friends…life can’t get any better than this. I love my new home.” Truly, I do love it here. It is an amazing city and I can’t imagine being any where else in the world.
