Alvin, Theodore, Simon and the gal pals they picked up earlier in the franchise are back, and their human minder, Dave played by Jason Lee, comes up with the bright idea of taking them on a cruise.
Thanks to product placement..Carnival Cruise Lines has possibly the longest form of product placement I have ever seen.
The whole gang ends up shipwrecked on a tropical island, along with the nefarious Ian (David Cross, who near the end delivers the film’s funniest speech) and lots of references to the Tom Hanks movie Cast Away that will elude the 5-year-olds in the audience.
Also on the island is Jenny Slate (playing a character named Zoe), who may have been exiled there. A particularly nice touch: Some of the ’munks change personalities as a result of a spider bite. Alvin then becomes the responsible one…hard to believe right? Well, believe it.
Noteworthy names provide some of the animated voices — Justin Long, Christina Applegate, Amy Poehler and Jesse McCartney. Once they’re run through the chip-erator, these familiar voices are of course unrecognizable.
There are some funny moments when the chipmunks make comments referring to other movies such as Lord of the Rings, and even a YouTube video hit “double rainbow”. I believe that was the creator’s ploy to sneak in some adult humour.
The rated G movie had some newer songs sung by the chipmunks. A few songs by Rihanna and Lady Gaga and one moment that could have been perceived as inappropriate when the chipettes were in towels singing “I whip my tail back and forth”.
Although this would not have been my first pick for a movie to see. I think it is great for kids and adults will enjoy it too. It keeps you entertained through most of the movie, not many dragging parts. However, they kind of failed when it comes to the adult humour inserts.
I give this movie 3 out of 5 stars.
