Disney Princess Auditions: My first attempt experience

So when I was home (in Florida) I came across the Disney audition page and decided to check it out.

To my disbelief, the Disney auditions for Hong Kong, Paris, Tokyo, Orlando and California were all happening over the week I was home.

You must have been joking me!

I know this may sound completely lame, but since I was little I always wanted to be a Disney Princess look-a-like.

So did I go to the audition? YOU BETCHA!

Now, I went in realistically knowing that there were numbers of auditions throughout the world and the chances of me getting a part were slim to none…but I had to at least say I tried.

So I will let you in on the auditioning process. Along the way, I will give you some tips and tricks that will hopefully help you if you audition in the future.

Tip #1: Print out some 8×10 headshots (don’t have to be professional, just make sure its a good shot and close up of your face)

Tip #2: Type up a casting resume. Does not have to be perfect. Get the basic info on there; Name, contact information, hair colour, eye colour, height, weight and of course any and all training/experience you have had in the past. Then staple it (or attach it in any way) to the back of your headshots.

Once you get to the auditions, they will take your headshot from you, have you sign in and get you to take a sticker with a number on it.

Then you get to sit down until the audition starts.

What to wear you may ask? Really it is up to you…the auditioning website says comfortable, I recommend something a little different though…

Tip #3: Wear comfortable but cute clothing…and something that will make you stand out from the others. I also suggest hair up. They don’t care about your hair colour…you’ll wear a wig anyhow. They want to see your face.

Tip #4: Wear make up. Put effort into what you look like (no matter how early the audition is) You want to be a Disney Princess don’t you? Then LOOK THE PART!

Now, once the audition starts, it’s all up to you.

They start by weeding out the weaklings by taking you into the dance room where in about 10 minutes you learn a 8 set of 8 count dance to a typical Disney song.

Mine was to a song by Beauty and the Beast.

Then they will get you in groups of three or four and make you perform the dance you JUST LEARNED. You get one shot.

However, they are not worrying if you mess up. They care more about your facial expressions and you showing your inner Disney personality.

Tip #5: Go all out. Look ridiculous. Channel your inner Disney character.

If you are shy or care what others think to much…this audition is NOT for you.

After everyone in your group performs the dance routine, they instantly tell you the numbers (you know, the sticker you have from sign in) who get to stay and they let the rest leave.

Once you get past that part. They line you up and check out your face closely (they have to see if you are princess material) and they take your “Disney measurements.”

Sadly, this is where my audition ended. I was told I should audition again…after I lost 15-20lbs (10kg).

However, my Disney height was perfect (5ft. 3in.) I was on the tall side for smaller characters and the shorter side for taller characters.

On the plus side, I was told my personality is perfect for Disney, I am just a tad curvier than a Disney princess should be.

I was flattered that I made it as far as I did with the audition. Who knows…maybe next time (if I audition again) I will make it every farther into the audition and get to try on the Disney princess wigs!

Some wise words from the Disney creator himself he once said a quote that is perfect to end this story with, that describes not only this situation, but life in general.

Enjoy guys! Hope you learned something…and if you are auditioning for Disney..GOOD LUCK! 🙂

“All of our dreams can come true,  if we have the courage to pursue them. ”    – Walt Disney

Hey!! I came across your blog whilst looking for tips on auditioning for Disneyland. I have my audition on the 24th September and I’m not sure what to wear or do with my hair. My hair is about shoulder length but I always wear hair extensions as it is so thin. Any advice what to do? And also clothes. Yoga pants and a top, or leggings and a stretchy dress? I would appreciate it SO much if you could help 🙂 xoxo

The fact that they told you to lose 15lbs and come back is outrageaous. Disney should be teaching young girls that princesses come in all shapes and sizes and have all different personalities. Skinny mini and “make-up” pretty shouldnt be the requirments. Besides real men want curves only dogs want bones

Disney wants people who fit in with the other characters at the park. Maybe they thought she’d be the PERFECT Alice but her body shape just looked a lot different than the other Alice’s. Not only that but the last bit of your comment is very hypocritical. “We should accept every body shape unless the women happens to be thin. Then no man will ever want them and it’s okay to insult them.” That makes sense.

      • The costumes are already pre-made and stop at about a size 8 (and from what I was told by a Disney friend of mine, it runs on a smaller size 8) – if they look at someone and know she won’t fit the costume, they have no choice but to turn her away (from what she said in a comment she was 155lbs and 5’3″ – I’m the same height and when I was that weight I was a size 10). Face characters don’t play only one character – they may be asked to play multiple characters, so sadly, they do have to fit a certain mold so the costumes will work on them.

Then I guess the song all about that bass is perfect for you, if your skinny your deformed and no guy wants you
Plus true they should have princesses of all shapes and sizes but they need to do that by making a new princess movie first if not kids are going to wonder why Cinderella gained 20 pounds since yesterday

Oh god not this BS about how people should come in all shapes and sizes. Costumes come in ONE SIZE, you fit it or you don’t. Also, Disney princesses may come in all colors nowadays, but they’re all very thin- not even chubby. You’re not thin you won’t look like a princess AND you won’t fit the costume. If you want job equality then apply for their desk jobs….I’m sorry but as a 10 year old visiting the park (or even today) I wouldn’t want my picture taken with a fat Alice in Wonderland.

      • Fair enough Hime, however… I blogged about the experience and wanted to be honest. I’m not bitter by the “lose weight” comment. No reason to get all sassy, it’s just an experience that I thought should be shared with others.

I am thinking of auditioning for a character actor through the Disney College Program and applying for hospitality and a vacation planner, but I really want to be a Disney Princess. I am kind of going in the same way as you with trying it to see what happens to at least say I did it. I can’t really ask my friends if I look like the Princesses because they all just look at hair color (because you wear a wig anyway) I tell them to look at my face and then they have no clue because they recognize the Princesses based off of their hair color. I was wondering if you know the facial characteristics of the Princesses (like rounder face, longer face, high cheek bones, small eyes, big eyes). I have been looking everywhere including the ones that Disney has hired and they all look different to me (for the same Princess) so I have not found a baseline. Second, I was wondering if I would have to lose weight or gain weight before I audition. I am 5’6″ and 130 lbs but I am a size 2-4 dress. Any information would be great I am so nervous and I really want to try but I don’t want to go in and find out that I look NOTHING like them.

Well, most Disney Princesses have more of a rounder face and big eyes. Either way, Disney has had some exceptions. 🙂

Based on what I’ve read online about the auditions you would only need to sing if the specific audition asks you to come prepared with a musical number. If they did ask it, it would probably only be 8-16 bars.

Hi there. I was wondering if you had any experience in the acting field prior to going to the auditions. Because many people are saying that many of the people auditioning put on their resumes their acting experience and that Disney prefers people with acting experience. Did you talk to the other people auditioning? Did they have acting experience?

1 eight count consists of 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8(You’ll learn chorography to those counts.) And since there is 8 of them, there will be 8 sets of counts 1-8. So technically, 64 counts all together. Does that help?

I will be auditioning for a Disney princess role in 2 weeks. I am an 8-12, it really depends on the material and the design. I wear an 8 in pants, a S-M in shirts and a M-L in dresses. If I am being honest, I was blessed in the breast department, hips and butt. Anyways, I have become concerned after reading multiple blogs and websites that I am too large for a princess role. Anyways, I was hoping, if you didn’t mind, if you could give me more insight on the sizes of princess gowns. Thanks!

Hello, it’s been my dream to work at Disneyland and there is an open casting in London which I am hoping to attend! I was just wondering if many of the girls who auditioned were young? What was the average age and and how old were you? I’m 18 and I don’t know if it is better to wait until I’m older to audition? Travelling to the audition is a lot of money so I don’t want it to be a waste!
Also (sorry to ask so many questions!), I’m English and I noticed a few people said costumes went to a size 8. I’m assuming that would be a US size 8 and therefore bigger in England? I’m not huge but I’m not tiny either so I don’t want to spend loads of money to be told I’m too big!
Thank you so much and this post was really helpful:)

My daughter just auditioned and made it through and was fitted for Cindy. She originally auditioned in San Francisco on a last minute whim, was selected for fur/face and hired for the CP in Orlando. She worked as one of the chipmunks and when an audition for Aurora came up she went for it. She made it through and worked both characters. She was then fitted for Dug (from Up) she worked as Aurora and Dug and when a Cindy audition came up she went for it and made it. She left the CP eventually and regretted it. She wanted to go back. In the last year she auditioned 4 or 5 times and just recently made it through. Never give up.

Hi! Thank you for giving some insight into what the auditions are like!! I live in Florida and grew up loving Disney (always will!). I went to the Magic Kingdom the other day and was so excited to wear my modern day minnie outfit I put together. Dressing up is the best. After seeing the parade I was like “I want to be part of it!!!!” I found a casting call for Alice and Rapunzel so I’m debating going. I’m 5 3-4ish and stay between 105-110, very fair, (natural toe head) very American looking. Wonderland happens to be my all time favorite (left the park with a handfull of souvenirs like always hah) and Tangled is a close 2nd, know it by heart.
I’m thinking to go into it for the experience more than anything but it would be awesome to get a role! What were the ages that you saw primarily that did well? I’m 25, but I still get told I look very young- could pass for a college freshman easily hah. Still I don’t want to go and be the grandma of the bunch ekk!
also- did you ever audition again?? 🙂

Yes! 5’7 is a perfect height! As long as you don’t grow any taller! 🙂

It’s been my dream and ambition for five years to be a Disney Princess, but alas! It cannot be, I’m slender, but I was cursed with big ribs. I am a dress size of 9/10. 😥 dreams, RUINED.

Its always been my dream to be a disney princess! I love acting and working with children. Im 5’4 and 110 pounds. I have long dark hair and dark eyes, and people tell me i look like pocohantas! Do you think my height and weight requirements fit that role?

Do you get to choose which role you audition for? I’m really interested in auditioning for Belle, will i have a say in this?
Also, if you have thick, healthy and long hair- will you still have to wear a wig?

Unfortunately, You do not get to pick who you want to be. They choose whoever they think will be best for the characters! 🙂

If you are 5’7, and they make you wear high heels for your character, will they still accept you if you are taller than 5’7 in high heels?

I am 16, and I am just looking at this for fun, but I was just wondering if Having no dance classes (Al least not in the last 14 years…) or acting classes would hurt you in any way? I mean it may but I don’t know. I’m actually really interested in this, but i don’t know how anyone would react if i told them about this. 🙂

    • Haha don’t worry, my mom gave me the “seriously… You have a MA” speech and I still auditioned. I vote give it a shot… You will need to learn a short dance for the auditions… But it’s pretty basic

I am 5’7 and weigh 140lb. I’ve had very little dancing experience, and no acting experience. I also have a birthmark the shape of Hawaii on my forehead that I can cover up (I haven’t tried, but i can try). do you think i have a chance?

I am curious how much dance experience is needed. My daughter wants to do this and has lots of improv skills and can be graceful but no specific dance experience. Is it basic jazz/theatre type dancing or more intensive?

I am turning 17, and I was wondering what kind of stuff U do at a Disney princess audition?
Do U have to be a good actor and dancer?

  64. To everyone who is 5’8-6’0, that’s the height for villains. Most of the villains are that height. I wanted to be Maleficent but I looked up her highly and the requirement is 5’9-6’0. Lady Tremain is 5’9 and the Evil Queen is 5’8 (or vice versa). So if you’re on the taller side chances are you won’t be a princess but you can still get a part as a villain.

I have pale porcelin skin which I think will work for Snow. Also I have ten years of dancing plus acting experience. Should I still try?

I don’t know if you’re still replying to comments here but I’m desperate and it’s worth a shot. So I’m 5′ 2″ and insanely wish to play Anna at Diseny (we are exactly the same) everyone says I look just like her and would be prefect. However I read the height requirements for a princess was a minimum of 5′ 4″ but then I read from several credited sources that Anna is only 5′ 0″ according to the era and location she was born in. Do you think Disney would be willing to overlook my height?? I did notice that Anna gets small maybe 1 inch heeled shoes with her costume, maybe that would make up for it?

Hey! This was very helpful thanks!! But I was wondering does being in the Disney College Program help at all? I was going to apply my junior year of college and then audition to be a princess. I’ve always dreamed of being Ariel!! Also I have a good amount of Theater experience (not as much dance though) but LOTS in improv. I am 5″ 3′ and weight 120lbs and also in the Navy Reserves. Would that help too, I’ve been told being in the Navy can make me stand out but being away 1 weekend a month might be a turn off for them. I’ve been to Disney 11 times and I know a girl that has been fur characters that said I could use her as a reference. Would that help too or do they not care? I feel like I have good chances but I’m worried about how many people try out that are probably in the same boat as me. What do you think? Thanks!!

Also I was wondering I have a small arrow tattoo on my ribs right under a normal bra strap. If I wanted to be Ariel where she only wears a bra top in her mermaid costume would I be turned away from it because of the tattoo? I noticed the bra top extends down a bit so it might be enough to cover it but would they even let me try the top on to see if it covers? Thanks!

Hi! How strict are they on height? I am 5′ 2.25″ and really want to go to an audition soon but audition webpage says 5′ 3″ as minimum for the roles, this is a dance position.

  78. Hi! I am considering auditioning in Chicago next week, but I’m nervous about not having “perfectly” straight teeth. When I see Disney princesses they usually have perfect smiles so I’m curious if they would even consider someone who doesn’t have that feature Do you know how picky they are on this?

I’m also curious about how they actually measure you. Do you have to take your shoes off?? Most princesses are required to heels so if Im teetering on the height requirement, won’t the heels make up of that or do you have to meet the disney measurement requirements standing barefoot?

  80. I have four beauty marks on my face one on my cheek which is the biggest and one just below my eyebrow which is the most visible and then one on each side of my cheek bones. I can cover them up well with makeup but you can still kind of see them. Next, I have a butt chin, it’s not very noticeable but it’s still there and you can see it when I smile mostly. Then I have a larger nose, everyone says it’s small and not big at all but I still think so but then again I’m very self conscious. So my question would be, will I get turned away for having those features?

I have a dilemma, i can easily lose weight if i want to. But unfortunately i am about 5’11. I have always wanted to be a disney princess, and i was wondering if they allow taller princesses. ?

  82. Hey! I’m about 5’7″ &a half. I am curvy with big boobs and a butt. I do need to lose some weight, but looking at me I don’t look over weigh,t I just have fat in the “right places.” I’m hoping to drop to 155lb. Do you think I’m too tall/ wrong figure to be a performer? I definely have all the qualities of a disney worker, but I don’t know about my looks. Can you tell me the taller characters? I’m sure the evil queen can be taller but I’d rather be a character with a good heart lol!”
